A keyword aims to define what your content is about. That keyword can be then targeted through keyword research, and then implementing those keywords to effect on your website to help your site list higher than your competitors when that term is searched. A good way to visualise a keyword is thinking of it as a hashtag in a social media post. Your keyword will relate to your business product or service and be relevant to what you think your customers are searching for in google. Find the right keywords and your website will be steps ahead of your competitors.

2) Understand your competition. Should you compete for certain keywords with other business or target alternative keywords?

Just like any other aspect of your business, when it comes to keywords with SEO it’s important to know your competition. Keywords can become competitive and saturated, so very important to think about your competition when selecting your keywords. For example, if you’re the only builder in your town keywords will be less targeted, simply putting the keyword ‘builder’ and your location would make you stand out. However, this is hardly ever the case with most industry’s having heavy competition in their location. In this case, it may prove beneficial to seek less-common keywords to rank your website. An easy way to do this would be to list your specific services or point of difference when thinking of keywords. Finding more niche keywords will help your website rank helping you to compete with your competitors.

3)Plan and optimize your website and update regularly with relevant content

Updating your website is critical. There’s nothing more off-putting to a customer than to jump onto a website to see old content. Not updating your website regularly could lead you to make easy mistakes such as having the wrong trading times, wrong dates, or even have missing services you now offer. By updating your website regularly with necessary info, not only will your website be more appealing to your customers, but search engines will rate your website higher as it proves your business is still active and trading.
