01Why trades need a different kind of website

Tradies don't get found by a home page. They get found by a page for the job and the suburb.

Nobody searches for a carpenter.

They search for a deck builder in Wollongong, a pergola in Dapto, a carpenter in Thirroul, renovations in Shellharbour. Every one of those is a different search with a different intent, and Google ranks a page, not a website. A five-page brochure site with a Services page and an About page cannot rank for any of them. That is the problem most tradie websites have and most web designers ignore.

At Adcraft, web design for trades starts with search. We work out every job type the business wants more of and every suburb it covers, then build a site with a page for each. Trademark Construction, a carpentry business in the Illawarra, is a clear example of the system.

02Research

Map every service against every suburb before designing a thing.

The first deliverable is not a mockup, it is a spreadsheet.

One axis lists the services: decks, pergolas, outdoor entertaining areas, fix-out carpentry, roofing carpentry, cladding, custom timber features, eaves and trims, handrails, stairs, doors, windows, skirting and architraves, flooring, repairs, renovations, extensions and framing. The other lists the suburbs: Wollongong, Figtree, Thirroul, Corrimal, Fairy Meadow, Balgownie, Bulli, Woonona, Coledale, Shellharbour, Mount Keira, Albion Park. Each cell is a search someone in the Illawarra makes, with its own volume and its own competition.

That matrix decides the site: which pages exist, what each one targets, how they link, and in what order they get written. It is the same research that drives our SEO service in Wollongong, done up front so the website is built on it rather than retrofitted later.

03Site architecture

Three page types, built to feed each other.

Service pages.

Nineteen of them, grouped under four parents (Custom Carpentry, Decks and Pergolas, Home Improvements, Renovations and Extensions). Each has one target search term, an H1 that matches it, an answer-first intro, what the service includes, the problems it solves, why choose this business, a quote prompt, related services and three recent jobs of the same type. Same template, different intent, so the site scales to a new service in an afternoon.

Location pages. A service-area hub and a page for every suburb the business works in, with copy written for that place and links to every service offered there. These are the pages that win the suburb plus job searches a single service page never can.

Project pages. Every finished job is its own page, titled by type and suburb (Two-Level Deck in Mount Pleasant, Skillion Pergola in Dapto, Insulated Flyover Pergola in Figtree) and tagged to a service and a location. Each one is fresh content, proof of work, and another internal link to the service and the suburb it belongs to.

Supporting pages (home, about, blog, contact) and a mega menu that exposes the full service tree from any page complete the structure.

04Internal linking

Internal links are the SEO most tradie sites are missing.

Pages do not rank on their own.

Google decides what a page is about, and how important it is, partly from the links pointing at it from the rest of the site. On a trades website we build the links deliberately:

Service to service. Each service links to its related services (decks to pergolas, handrails and outdoor areas) so authority flows between the pages that share customers.

Service to location. Each service page names the suburbs it is offered in and links to them. Each location page links back to every service. That is what makes the service x location combination rank: a deck builder in Figtree search lands on a page that is linked from both the Decks page and the Figtree page.

Project to both. Every finished job links up to its service and its suburb, and the service and suburb pages pull in the latest jobs. New work keeps strengthening the pages that earn enquiries.

Menu, breadcrumbs, footer. The mega menu links every service from every page, breadcrumbs link every inner page up to its parent, and the footer repeats the key services and suburbs. Nothing on the site is more than two clicks from the home page, and no page is an orphan.

Internal linking structure of the Trademark Construction website: 19 service pages in four groups, 12 suburb pages and 12 job pages, and what each page type links to

05Design

Modern design that earns trust on a phone.

Structure wins the ranking; design wins the enquiry.

Tradie websites are usually dated or generic, so we design them to look like a business worth paying for: large editorial headlines, full-bleed photography of real jobs on real local homes, a palette drawn from the logo and the materials, and plenty of white space so the work does the talking. Numbered proof blocks (local, licensed, clear, lasting), a four-step how-we-work section, a by-the-numbers strip and real reviews with names and suburbs turn trust into something a visitor can scan in seconds.

Most of these visitors are on a phone, often on a job site. The number is tap-to-call and the Get a Free Quote button is in the header on every page. Service pages carry a quote prompt in the sidebar, the menu itself has a Not sure where to start? prompt, and every page ends with a Start Your Project block, a map and the phone number. This is the custom web design approach applied to a trade: no template, one job to do.

06Technical SEO

Built so Google can read it, index it and rank it.

Every page gets a unique, intent-matched title tag and meta description, a single H1, a logical heading hierarchy and descriptive alt text on every image.

Service pages are written answer-first so the opening paragraph can be lifted into a featured snippet or an AI answer, which is the foundation of our AI SEO work.

URLs are clean and readable (/services/decks/, /locations/carpenter-figtree/, /work/skillion-pergola-dapto/). Canonical tags, Open Graph and Twitter cards, WebP images at sized breakpoints and a lean WordPress build keep pages fast on a mobile connection. Local business schema, the licence number site-wide and the Google Business Profile embedded on every page give Google one consistent entity to trust. Google Tag Manager is installed so every call and quote form is tracked as a conversion from launch, which is what lets Google Ads and SEO be measured in leads rather than clicks.

07Results

A website with a page for every way a customer can search.

The site launched with 19 service pages, 12 suburb pages and a growing project gallery, every page indexed, tracked and linked to the pages around it.

The business now has a page for each job in each place it works, a design that reflects the quality of the work, and a path to a free quote from anywhere on the site. The owner can add a finished job from a phone, and every job added strengthens the service and suburb pages behind it.

This is how Adcraft builds websites for plumbers, electricians, builders, carpenters, landscapers, roofers and every other trade in Wollongong, the Illawarra, Sydney and across Australia. Trade websites start from $5,000. For the trades that want to rank faster, or want the phone ringing while the rankings build, SEO and Google Ads run on the same structure, the way they do for Zenith Roofing.
