Search "marketing agency Wollongong" and you get a page of agencies that all promise growth. Some are excellent. Some are a Sydney agency with a Wollongong landing page. Some are one person and a template. We run an agency here, so read this knowing that, but these are the questions we would ask if we were the client, and we answer each one for ourselves so you can hold us to the same standard.
What should you look for in a marketing agency?
Evidence, transparency and ownership. Evidence means results in businesses like yours with numbers attached. Transparency means you know who does the work, what it costs in total and what the report will show. Ownership means your accounts, data and website stay in your name. The twelve questions below test those three things.
1. What results have you achieved for a business like mine?
Ask for a case study with figures, in your industry or one with the same buying pattern. A tradie and a dentist both live on local search; an online store does not. Vague answers predict vague results. Ours are on the work page: a radiology group's organic traffic up 218% across its clinics, a roofing company's phone calls up from 12 to 65 in the same six weeks two years apart, a removalist moving from an average Google position of 26.9 to 8.4 in a year.
2. Who actually does the work?
Some agencies sell locally and outsource everything. Ask who will write your ads, build your pages and answer your email, and whether they are employees. You should be able to meet the team before you sign.
3. What does the first 90 days look like?
A good answer is specific: audit, tracking set-up, the first campaigns or pages, and what you will see at day 30, 60 and 90. "We will build your brand awareness" is not a plan.
4. How will I know it is working?
Enquiries, calls and sales, not impressions and likes. Ask to see a sample monthly report, whether calls are tracked, and whether form submissions are tied back to the campaign that produced them.
5. What is the contract?
Twelve-month lock-ins protect the agency, not you. Month-to-month terms mean the agency has to earn the next month. Our marketing retainers run month to month from $750 a month for that reason.
6. What do I own?
Your Google Ads account, Google Business Profile, website, analytics and domain should all be registered to your business, with the agency added as a manager. Google's guidelines for representing your business assume the business controls its own profile. If an agency builds assets in its accounts, leaving means starting again.
7. Which services are done in-house?
SEO, Google Ads, social, web design, branding, photography and video are different crafts. An agency that does one well and refers the rest out is fine, as long as it says so. Problems start when the website, the ads and the search work come from three suppliers who never speak.
8. How do you handle AI search?
Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT now answer many questions before anyone clicks. Ask what the agency does to get your business cited in those answers and whether it can show how an AI answer describes you today. See AI SEO for what the work involves.
9. What will it cost in total?
Management fees are one line, advertising spend paid to Google and Meta is another, and website or content work is a third. Get all three on one page. For a local service business a realistic starting point is $750 to $2,500 a month in management plus $1,500 to $3,000 a month in Google Ads spend if paid search is part of the plan. The federal government's guide to developing a marketing plan is a useful frame.
10. Can I talk to a current client?
Any agency with happy clients will say yes. Read the Google reviews too, and look for ones that name the service and the result. The ACCC's guidance on managing online reviews tells you what a business may not do with reviews, which is worth knowing when a rating looks too tidy.
11. What happens when a campaign is not working?
The right answer involves data and a change of approach, not a bigger budget. Ask for an example of a campaign the agency stopped or rebuilt, and why. Agencies that have never killed a campaign have never looked closely at one.
12. Are you a marketing agency, an advertising agency or a creative agency?
The labels overlap. A marketing agency plans and runs the channels that bring enquiries, an advertising agency makes and places ads, and a creative agency makes the brand, the design and the content. Most Illawarra businesses need all three in proportion, from people who talk to each other.
A shortlist method that works
Pick three agencies. Send each the same brief: your business, your goal in numbers, your budget. Score the replies against the twelve questions, meet the two best, then decide on evidence.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a marketing agency in Wollongong cost?
Most local agencies charge between $750 and $5,000 a month in management, depending on the channels and the size of the business, with advertising budgets paid to the platforms on top. Entry-level retainers covering one or two channels sit at the lower end; multi-channel programmes sit higher. Get management, ad spend and project work quoted separately.
Should I choose a Wollongong agency or a Sydney one?
Choose the agency that can show results in businesses like yours and that you can meet. Local knowledge matters for local search and for the words Illawarra customers use; it matters less for a national online store. A Sydney agency with a Wollongong landing page is not local; ask where the people doing your work sit.
What is the best marketing agency in Wollongong?
The one whose case studies look like your business and whose clients will take your call. Lists that rank agencies are usually written by one of the agencies on the list, this article included, so judge on evidence: published results, named clients, month-to-month terms and a clear answer to who does the work.
What is a red flag when choosing an agency?
Guaranteed first-page rankings, a refusal to show real numbers, pressure to sign quickly, long lock-in contracts and accounts set up in the agency's name rather than yours. Any one of these is a reason to pause; two together are a reason to walk away.
